Steven Bletsoe – Morfa Ward

I am formally announcing that I will be standing as an Independent Candidate for the Local Authority Elections for Morfa Ward for both Bridgend Town Council and Bridgend County Borough Council in May 2017. I will be doing so under the guidance and help of Change For Bridgend.
Many of you will know that I have become politically active since my return to my hometown five years ago and I hope that the residents and businesses who choose to live and work in the proud Ward of Morfa feel that I would be the right person to represent them.

Born in Bridgend General Hospital I spent the first 21 years of my life living in Wildmill, delivering newspapers around the Ward at the age of 12, and at the age of 14 I worked the milk round before going off to school for the day at Brynteg Comprehensive. I worked for the Nationalised British Rail Network then, after 6 years of Sales Roles which included a family relocation to Wakefield in West Yorkshire, I co-launched a Property Location Company with my wife. After selling this company I co-founded Ella Riley’s Sweets, and secured the Intellectual Property Rights to the World Famous Riley’s Toffee Rolls, moving production back to Bridgend in 2011. The toffee rolls are now available around the World.

I served for two years as Chair of Bridgend Traders Forum, securing the consultation on controlled re-introduction of traffic around Dunraven Place, a battle that Traders had fought for 8 years. I also sit on the Town Twinning Committee, offering advice and guidance on the relationship with our partners in Villenave D’Ornon and Langenau. I started, built and run the Nolton Street Party, which has now become the Country’s Largest free to attend annual CosPlay event, CosBont. I co-created the Bridgend Music Celebration event recently held at Sony Theatre in Bridgend College and will be making this a regular three monthly event for the town.

I will be fighting my campaign on true Independent representation for the entire Ward, which I see as important for its growth and prosperity. On a Ward level I will be looking to create community co-operatives to combat the ill conceived and badly implemented “2 Black Bag” waste policy. I will be working pro-actively to address the issue of recycling whilst not penalising those with increased needs. I will work on developing a plan to give Bridgend Town an identity, to arrest the increase in empty shops in the Morfa Ward , to create a vibrant hub where businesses are encouraged to open, thrive and create job opportunities for our residents. I will work purely on behalf of the residents, to have no Party affiliation in any way, to speak open and honestly for the Constituents who would have put their faith and trust in me to work on their behalf.

On a County level I will be looking to address the increasing level of sickness reported at BCBC which has become the 5th Worst performing Local Authority in Wales on this matter. I will find and address this core problem and work on a solution for the benefit of staff and tax payers alike. I intend to work on matters of productivity to address the savings that must be made at BCBC over the next five year term. To ensure that streamlining is placed at the forefront, saving pennies, that translate into pounds that will multiple into the millions that are required to be saved, while at the same time protecting services at all cost by ensuring maximum productivity and minimal wastage. I will promote Bridgend as a County with a wealth of opportunities to those outside our area, and sell the heritage and natural beauty to visitors and investors alike, by re-instating the tourism department immediately; we must start telling the outside world what we already know – that Bridgend County is a great place, with great people and great opportunities.
